Faculty Resources
Digital Information Literacy Workshop
The Essential Studies program now includes a new requirement for students at UND. We are seeking applications for faculty development for new and existing courses to be validated with a Special Emphasis in Digital Information Literacy.
The Information Society needs a citizenry capable of accessing, creating, evaluating, organizing, interpreting, and disseminating information in increasingly digital formats: these transferrable and applied skills are necessary for success in the current and emerging workforce—and also necessary for active, thoughtful, and ethical participation in contemporary democratic society. Digital Information Literacy classes should empower students to actively participate in information environments, and therefore such classes will involve students in actual practice through projects in which they will access, communicate, create, and distribute information.
Course Requirements
- Courses must be 200-level and above.
- Courses can be existing within Essential Studies (and either adding the special emphasis or changing their current special emphasis).
- Courses can be new to Essential Studies.
- Courses must align with Information Literacy learning goal.
- Courses cannot carry more than one special emphasis and they cannot be designated as capstone courses.
Faculty Requirements
The Digital Information Literacy Course Development will begin mid-May with a series of workshops and faculty will have time over the summer and early in the Fall semester to continue to develop the course. Courses are expected to be submitted for ES validation by December 1st, 2024. Faculty are required to complete the following two workshops and to submit a course with Digital Information Literacy as an outcome for ES validation:
- Faculty are required to participate in the Quality Course Design Workshop offered by TTaDA on May 16, 17, and 20 with the Information Literacy learning goal in mind. Upon completion of workshop expectations, faculty will receive a stipend of $1000.
- Faculty are required to participate in the Digital Information Literacy Course Development Workshop offered by UND Librarians from 9am-4pm on May 22 (or via Zoom on May 29th). The workshop will be centered on the threshold concepts that informed the development of the Digital Information Literacy special emphasis criteria. Faculty will be subsequently partnered with librarians and instructional designers to design or redesign a course informed by these foundational criteria, as outlined by the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
- Developed courses are expected to be submitted for validation as a special emphasis course in Digital Information Literacy in the Essential Studies program by December 1st, 2024. Upon completion of Digital Information Literacy Course Development expectations faculty will receive a stipend of $2500.
Faculty are strongly encouraged to also participate in the Teaching Information Literacy and Critical Thinking in the Age of AI workshop offered by TTaDA (optional) on either May 21 and 23 or on May 28 and 30. Upon completion of workshop expectations faculty will receive a stipend of $500.
