Description and Timelines of Surveys
The Office of University Analytics & Planning is involved in conducting and analyzing a variety of different surveys and tests designed to provide assessment for different subgroups within the university learning environment and community. The survey information provided can also be accessed by completing the Secure Web Pages Authorization Form and returning it to the Office of University Analytics & Planning. The following list serves as an outline of the most prominent surveys and tests utilized by the Office.
Advising Survey asking students about their academic advising experiences. This is a UND-developed survey, of approximately 34 questions, with purpose of gauging student perceptions on the quality of the academic and career advising they are receiving.
This survey helps identify students' reasons for leaving UND. The instrument groups 48 "reasons" in the areas of personal, academic, institutional, financial, & employment as to why a student left. Each of these areas are identified as a major reason, minor reason, or not a reason. This survey was first conducted in 2003 and has been administered annually since then.
This survey assesses alumni's perceptions of UND's impact on their personal and professional growth and development and provides a detailed employment and education history. Alumni factors related to general background, employment history, and activities are included in the study. The survey was first conducted in 2003 and has been administered every other year.
The Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) collects data from entering first-year (FY) students about their high school experiences as well as their expectations for participating in educational activities during their first college year. The survey, developed through the Indiana Center for Postsecondary Research, will be administered prior to the start of fall semester and is designed to be paired with the NSSE data. The first survey was conducted in 2010.
CIRP is a national study of the American Higher Education System sponsored by the American Council on Education and administered by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California-Los Angeles. This survey designed to assess the demographic characteristics, past experiences, current opinions, as well as the aspirations of new incoming freshmen. The CIRP survey has been conducted on the campus of the University of North Dakota in the summer or early fall semester since 1967. This survey provides helpful information for the faculty and administration in their attempts to design and deliver quality education.
The Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA), launched in 2000 by the Council for Aid to Education, contains open-ended type questions designed to measure the impact of an institution upon the learning ability of its students. Freshmen and senior participants are tested at two different timelines and presented with either a “performance task” or an “analytic writing task” and asked for a written response. The CLA uses a hierarchical linear modeling to calculate institutional “value-added” scores. UND first participated in 2009-2010. See summary information under the OIR Newsletters & Clips.
Student Information Questionnaire (SIQ) Freshman Survey View sample
A survey designed to assess some demographic and enrollment management-related characteristics of the incoming freshmen. The SIQ was first initiated as a stand-alone survey in the summer 2008 and administrated at Getting Started. Many of these questions are also asked as "local" questions during the administration of the UCLA (CIRP) Freshman Survey. The UND-SIQ is scheduled for administration as needed.
This follow-up survey is administered to the group of students who had been surveyed during their participation at �Getting Started� during their incoming freshmen year four years earlier. This is a survey designed to assess the demographic information, probable fields of study, senior self-rating, activities engaged in during past year, objectives considered to be essential or very important, political orientation and opinions, as well as senior satisfaction with the University of North Dakota. This survey is carried out in an effort to track students� progress toward graduation after their four-year study at UND. The findings of this study are presented with students� responses as freshmen and four years later, and how they compare with their national counterparts from public universities.
The National Survey for Student Engagement (NSSE) is the best known national project for measuring students engagement. The survey, administered by the Indiana Center for Postsecondary Research, measures the extent to which first-year students and seniors engage in practices understood to be effectively linked with learning outcomes, personal development, student satisfaction, and graduation. Students actively involved in both academic and out-of-class activities have been found to gain more from the college experience than those who are not involved. UND participates in NSSE every two years.
The Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) was constructed to parallel the National Survey of Student Engagement-The College Student Report (NSSE). The faculty version focuses on: Faculty perceptions of how often their students engage in different activities, the importance faculty place on various areas of learning and development, the types of interactions faculty have with students, and how faculty members organize class time. The pilot test of the FSSE was administered electronically as a web-only survey in spring 2003.
A survey that is scheduled every six years in order to assess the quality and needs of University of North Dakota faculty members. The survey extracts information regarding a variety of different faculty issues including teaching practices, research activities, interaction with students and colleagues, perceptions of institutional climate, as well as job satisfaction.
The College Student Inventory (CSI) is a self-assessment tool used as part of the Noel-Levitz Retention Management System that asks students to reflect on academic, personal, and social experiences and perspectives. There are one hundred questions in this inventory that provide analyzed results about academic motivation, sociability, and receptivity to institutional help. Completing the CSI is voluntary. This CSI information helps students reflect on how to maximize their college experience, helps academic advisors target resources for students, and gives the Enrollment Management Team a snapshot of our first year students as a group. The CSI has been conducted each fall since 2002.
The Campus Quality Survey is an instrument sponsored by Performance Horizons that was developed by adapting categories used in the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the Presidential Award for Quality to fit the educational environment. The survey instrument offered 91 statements including 10 North Dakota University System (NDUS) questions for faculty and staff to respond to. Participants are asked to rate the University of North Dakota from two perspectives: How It Is Now and How It Should be for the items based on how they feel the programs, services, and activities are currently meeting the needs of students and employees. This survey has been administered in the fall of even numbered years, starting in 2002.
The University of North Dakota and Board of Higher Education are coordinating a Student Satisfaction Inventory developed by Noel-Levitz for all levels of students at 11 state universities and colleges. This survey collects information about the experiences of our students by measuring our students'' satisfaction over a wide range of college experience. Students rate each item in the inventory by the importance of the specific expectation as well as their satisfaction with how well that expectation is being met. A performance gap is then determined by the difference in the importance rating and the satisfaction rating. Similar to the SSI, the Priorities for Online Learners Survey, also developed by Noel-Levitz, measures satisfaction of students taking online courses.
The Your First College Year (YFCY) Survey is part of a national study for use at the end of the first college year as a follow-up survey to the annual Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey that is administered at the end of their first year. YFCY includes 21 measures of student satisfaction with curricular and co-curricular experiences, campus facilities, and student services. YFCY also asks students to rate how successful they feel in adjusting to several aspects of the first college year. It yields data that can be used to improve the effectiveness of academic and CO-curricular programs, retention rates, and learning outcomes. At the University of North Dakota, 1,106 first-year (576 male and 530 female) students received the 2002 YFCY Survey by mail in April 2002. An overall net response rate of 21 percent was attained.
Sophomore Satisfaction Survey View sample
A survey designed to assess the demographic characteristics, college related goals, hours per week spent working, frequency of classroom activities, importance of the instructors, satisfaction with service offices, general satisfaction items, as well as the University of North Dakota's contribution to personal growth of the university sophomore. This survey is conducted to determine sophomore's satisfaction with their experiences at UND.
Graduating Student Survey View sample
A survey initiated in 1991 giving University of North Dakota the capacity to conduct an exit survey of graduating students. The survey is intended to extract a variety of information from the students including issues such as: overall satisfaction with the university experience, student involvement, cognitive and affective development, technological uses, as well as future goals and aspirations. Last survey was conducted in the spring of 2001. A new survey was developed in spring 2004. This is the first time an online survey has been used with our graduating students.
Placement Survey View sample
A survey designed to assess the demographic characteristics, pursuit of additional education, current place of residence, employment information, annual salary, size of worksite information, internship and cooperative education participation while attending University of North Dakota, as well as North Dakota employment information on UND alumni who earned a bachelors degree within two years of the date of conducting of the survey.
The employer satisfaction is part of the accountability measures of the "Roundtable Report" that were enacted by the 2001 and 2003 North Dakota legislatures. The North Dakota University System have partnered with the firm of Noel-Levitz to conduct this survey. The collection of information from employers about graduates is vital and appropriate to a university's understanding of whether it is successful in meeting its educational goals.
A survey initiated in 1991, designed to assess the demographic characteristics of the students living in the residential halls at the University of North Dakota as well as their satisfaction toward housing staff, maintenance and custodial staff, policies and procedures, facilities, dinning services, programming, and hall government. Survey results are used to implement a number of changes in the residence halls.
In order to better assess the strengths and shortcomings of the UND transfer process, the Transfer Student Survey was administered. The questionnaire was developed by the UND Transfer Student Task Force. First-time administration of the instrument was done in January 2007 to new (fall 2006) transfer students who were enrolled for Spring 2007.
The EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) hosted a study to explore the use of information technology in teaching and research. The purpose of the survey is to provide better information about technology services and improve the faculty teaching and research experience.
The EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) hosted a national study intended to explore the use of technology in higher education. The survey focuses on freshmen and seniors as they represent early in and near the end of their college careers. UND began participating in the 2006 survey administration.
