Barry S. Brode - Director of Television & Radio, Television Center
Joined UND in 1980
What is a typical workday like?
There is no typical day for me, which is why I really enjoy what I do. We produce videos for UND Today, help market UND with promotional videos, produce events such as Convocation and Commencement Ceremonies, operate Cable Channel 3, and provide video support for UND strategic messages. I serve on the Prairie Public Radio Council as part of my role with UND Radio. It's a fantastic group of people who are dedicated to keeping public radio an important source of news information and entertainment.
What do you like about your job?
I love producing big events and directing live telecasts. The spring commencement ceremony and convocation require weeks of planning to execute these complex productions. It involves getting to work with some great people on campus like the folks in Ceremonies and University Events, the Chester Fritz Auditorium, and the UND Music Department. I've learned a lot from working with these and other groups. It's a blast!
What makes UND a great place to work?
It's the people! I enjoy getting to know our students, faculty and staff. I've been fortunate to work with senior leaders who are mentors to me and have helped me build a fantastic career. But most of all my co-workers hold a special place in my heart. They are more like family than co-workers. We are all passionate about what we do and we truly love helping students and the institution accomplish goals.
What did you do before working at UND?
I worked at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse as a faculty member. I taught public speaking. I was also a tour guide at the G. Heileman Brewing Company. So I can tell you how beer is made - step by step!
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I would like to be a motivational speaker. In my 36 years at UND I've developed a number of presentations and workshops that could be given beyond the campus. So, in my retirement (not sure when that will be) I would love to travel and speak.
