University of North Dakota (UND) - in association with the Midwest Big Data Hub - will host an Early Career Big Data Summit (ECBDS) event for early career Big Data researchers (graduate students, staff/post-docs, and faculty) that will provide a venue for connecting with Industry, third-sector volunteer groups, and established researchers.

Events will include:

  • Multiple industry panel discussions
  • Researcher lightning talks
  • Hands-on application Hackathon.

The Summit is expected to have representation from the Digital/Precision Agriculture, Transportation, Social Media, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems industries.


The ECBDS has no registration fees, but registration is required for those:

  • Wishing to participate in hosted panels
  • Wishing to present at lightning talks
  • Wishing to participate in the Friday - April 8th, All-day Hackathon
    Two Categories: Big Data Application Development & Big Data Educational Video
    *NOTE - Hackathon team members must be United States citizens of age 18 years or older in order to participate.

47th Annual UND Writers Conference, "The Art of Science"

ECBDS will be co-located with the 47th Annual UND Writers Conference.

The theme of this year's writers conference is “The Art of Science” (AoS) . In addition to Summit events, all ECBDS attendees will be allowed to attend all AoS events including:

  • Keynote presentation by Brian Greene (string theorist, author of The Elegant Universe , and entertaining communicator of cutting-edge scientific concepts)
  • Greene post-keynote social event at the North Dakota Museum of Art
  • Keynote presentation by award winning science fiction writer - Kim Stanley Robinson
  • Thursday afternoon recording of Prairie Public "Main Street" radio program's interview and audience question/answer session with Brian Greene - "How to communicate science to a popular audience."
  • And more...
