ProctorU is a live online proctoring service available 24/7 that allows students to take exams from anywhere using a webcam and Internet connection. This service uses live proctors who monitor exams by observing the the student (via webcam) and his/her computer screen in real time.
Students: Check your Blackboard course site or contact your instructor to find out if ProctorU is an option for your course.
Verify ProctorU Eligibility
- For semester based courses, please verify that ProctorU is an option for your course by checking the course Blackboard site or contacting your instructor.
- ProctorU is now available for all 9-month enroll anytime courses. It is also available for PDF (printed) exams with approved equipment. Please see Using ProctorU for PDF Exams for equipment requirements and instructions.
- Review the technical specifications and test your system for compatibility. Please note that wireless network connections are NOT recommended.
Designate ProctorU in the UND Proctoring Site
- Using your NDUS.identifier, log in to the proctoring site through the Exams link in your Blackboard course or at https://apps.und.edu/proctoring/main.
- Select Designate a Proctor from the main screen.
- Select the course you would like to designate ProctorU for by clicking on Designate and read the Proctor Policy.
- Select ProctorU Online from the drop down menu and submit your designation.
- You will receive an email notification once ProctorU has accepted your designation. Once your instructor has posted details for your exam, you may schedule your exam with ProctorU.
Create a ProctorU Account
Go to the ProctorU Portal for UND.
Click Sign Up at the top of the page.
Enter your information to create your account and add a photo.

Log In and Schedule your Exam
- Click Log in at the top of the ProctorU Portal for UND.
- Use the UserID and Password that you entered when creating your account
- Click Schedule New Session and search for your course/exam.
- Select a date and time (converted to the time zone specified when creating your account) for your exam, then click Schedule. Add any comments, then click Add Reservation.
- Note the examination fee and any additional fees, then click Proceed to Cart.
Pay for your Exam
- While logged in, select My Cart in the upper right of the screen.
- Review your exam information and click Proceed to Payment to continue with payment. Click Remove if you do not wish to proceed.
- Verify contact information, enter credit card information and click Process Charge.
Students who use ProctorU are charged based on the length of time for each exam. Click here to view ProctorU examination fees.
Take Your Exam
Once the exam has been scheduled and paid for, you will see a countdown timer appear on your ProctorU Portal page. When it is time to begin your exam, the button will become active and you will click to start the examination process.

Cancel a Scheduled Exam
Exams may be cancelled or rescheduled on ProctorU's website.
If your exam is scheduled to begin in less than 6 hours, you must call ProctorU (855-772-8678) in order to cancel. You will not be able to cancel the exam through ProctorU's webpage.
If you have scheduled a Take-it-Now exam, you must call ProctorU (855-772-8678) in order to cancel. You will not be able to cancel the exam through ProctorU's webpage.
Locate Exam Information
Exam information, including length of exam and special accommodations (if any), should be included in the course Blackboard site and/or the course syllabus. Verify this information before scheduling a time with ProctorU.
Use ProctorU for Printed Exams
- ProctorU is available for PDF (printed exams) if allowed by the instructor.
- The process for using ProctorU with PDF exams is slightly different because the exam cannot be printed by the test taker. Instead, test takers must have approved equipment, which includes a touchscreen laptop (w/stylus) to write on top of the PDF exam and an external web cam.
- Review the full list of required equipment and testing instructions in the Blackboard Student Resource Course. Under the Taking Tests menu item, scroll down to the Test Equipment for ProctorU folder.
- Equipment must be tested and approved prior to being able to schedule the exam appointment with ProctorU.
- Distance Engineering Degree Program (DEDP) students, contact the DEDP office at 701.777.4333 with any questions.
Recommendations for Students
- Check the course Blackboard site or contact the course instructor to find out if ProctorU is an option for proctored exams.
- If using ProctorU, sign up for an exam time slot as soon as possible to ensure that the desired time is available (at least 3 days in advance). Additional charges will be incurred for scheduling to take an exam less than 72 hours in advance.
- Exam information, including length of exam and special accommodations (if any), should be included in the course Blackboard site and/or the course syllabus. Verify this information before scheduling a time with ProctorU.
- A webcam and microphone will be required for using ProctorU. Install and test webcam and microphone functionality prior to taking the exam.
- As with all online exams, do not use a wireless Internet connection.
- Have a government issued ID card available to hold up to the webcam so that ProctorU can verify identity.

What are the Technology Requirements for ProctorU?
A webcam and microphone will be required for using ProctorU. Install and test webcam and microphone functionality prior to taking the exam.
As with all online exams, do not use a wireless Internet connection.
ProctorU does not support tablets or smartphones at this time.

What Identification is Needed for ProctorU?
Have a government issued photo ID card available to hold up to the webcam so that ProctorU can verify identity.

What if I do not See My Course/Exam Listed?
Check the Blackboard course site or contact the instructor to find out if ProctorU is an option for the course. The exam typically is not available for scheduling until approximately 10 days prior to the exam start date.
Note: Electronic proctoring is available primarily for online/distance/hybrid courses. On campus courses typically are not available through ProctorU. If an exam is in PDF format (printed), special equipment is required and must be tested/approved before the exam will be made available for scheduling.
What Accommodations are Available for Students with Disabilities?
Accommodations are available for students with disabilities. ProctorU does not charge for additional time needed to complete exams. Please work with Disability Services for Students and your course instructor to make arrangements.
What happens if I have Technical Problems?
ProctorU will handle any technical issues that arise with webcams, microphones, etc. UND Tech Support will handle any other issues that arise with the exams in Blackboard. When exam issues occur, ProctorU will typically contact the instructor of the course first, and then reach out to UND Tech Support.

Sending Exam Information to ProctorU for Online Courses
- When adding an exam for an online course to the UND Proctoring system, select Allow Electronic Proctoring in the exam details area.
- ProctorU will be sent a list of exam details daily for courses that have opted to allow electronic proctoring within the UND Proctoring system. Exams will be available for scheduling through ProctorU within 24 hours as long as it is within 10 days of the exam start date.
- If you have added your exam to the UND Proctoring system, then you do not need to send any additional information to ProctorU.
Please post a notice within your course if you do not wish to allow students to use ProctorU.
If you are NOT using the UND Proctoring system for your online exam, please use one of the following options to send your exam information to ProctorU:
- Request a ProctorU admin account by sending an email to email@example.com.

Best Practices for Electronic Proctoring
Recommendations for Instructors
- When creating exams, faculty may wish to consider the length and number of exams that require a proctor. Students who use Proctor U are charged based on the length of time for each exam. Click here to view ProctorU examination fees. Alternative methods of assessment may be used. Please contact CILT for assistance.
- Provide exam details (not exam content), including length of time needed to complete the exam and special accommodations (if any), to ProctorU in advance. See options above for sending exam information to ProctorU. Students will not be able to schedule an exam until ProctorU has received the exam information. Students incur an extra fee to schedule exams with fewer than 72 hours advance notice.
- A link to the ProctorU web page should be provided in the course Blackboard site under the exams menu item. For courses that do not use Blackboard, the link may be provided in another location.
- Make it clear to students when the exam will be available (including exam start and end date/time) and how much time it will take.
- Check to make sure your exam settings are set correctly in Blackboard (if applicable). Consider removing the Force Complete setting on the exam to allow proctors to let the student back into the exam using the exam password in the event of a network or computer failure.
- Accommodations are available for students with disabilities. ProctorU does not charge for additional time needed to complete exams. Please work with Disability Services for Students and communicate with ProctorU to make arrangements.

- Distance learning course - academic course where the student accesses information and communicates with the instructor asynchronously or synchronously using online or web-based technology.
- Hybrid course – academic course which combines distance learning students and face-to-face students in the same course, often with synchronous interaction between distance and face-to-face students and the instructor using online or web-based technology.
- Traditional On-Campus course – academic course where students and instructor meet synchronously in a physical location for regularly scheduled class times.
- Printed (PDF) exams – exams that typically require the student to complete a printed copy of the exam from Blackboard. When taken with ProctorU, the exam is not printed and instead the student must have required technology to be able to digitally add mark-ups to the PDF.
- Physical proctor – a proctor that is located in the same physical location as the student taking the exam.
- Online proctoring database – a system developed for online and distance courses that allows students to designate physical proctors and have the exam password and information sent automatically to confirmed proctors.
- Tegrity Remote Proctoring – part of the Tegrity Lecture Capture system which records the student's video and computer desktop throughout the examination. A "live" proctor is not present and the instructor is responsible for reviewing recordings to ensure integrity of exams. Additional information can be found on Tegrity's Remote Proctoring website.
When to Use Online Proctoring
- Electronic proctoring is meant to be used primarily for online/distance/hybrid courses to meet student assessment needs.
- ProctorU is available for non-term (Enroll anytime) and non-credit courses. Printed (PDF) exams may be taken with ProctorU if the student has the additional technology required.
Traditional On-Campus Courses
- Faculty should not use ProctorU as a substitute for proctoring regularly scheduled on-campus course exams due to the additional cost to students. ProctorU could be used for traditional on-campus courses for make-up exams or other special circumstances.
Students must be informed prior to registration through Campus Connection of the additional costs that may be incurred due to proctoring.
Online proctoring of printed (PDF) exams poses special challenges and risks, but is available through ProctorU for students who have appropriate equipment.
Alternate Proctoring Options
- Instructors may wish to continue to allow students to designate an approved physical proctor. This option may be preferred for paper-based exams. Instructors may use the online proctoring database alone or with ProctorU.
- Tegrity Remote Proctoring is an option for lower stakes exams. There is no direct cost to students for use of this service. It does not involve a "live" proctor. This system allows video recording of the students' webcams and computer screen to be stored for later review by the instructor. It is the responsibility of the instructor to review exam recordings.
